Racially Profiled...

To the white male in Horton...I am UNC student not a just another black boy on the streets of Franklin...Yes a UNC student...I pay may $17,000 tuition just like everyone else...If I choose to study in Horton with my friends, I do not need your approval--I am an adult...Don't ask me and friends 20 different questions before we enter the building that our money furnishes with lights and warm water.

To Dan --yes I recently found out your name-- maybe your intentions were good, but you came off as an jerk...Point. Blank. Period. And yes, we know people who live in Horton... a lot of people...and if we want to study with them, who are you to tell us NO?...Just because you see three black students wearing urban apparrel doesn't mean we are "GANSTERS"...Please be mindful that Carolina is diverse...Black people do attend the University. Maybe I am being to harsh but the way you presented yourself to my friends and me was uncalled for...

Thank You Mr. Dan...and I hope next time you think before you speak...Have a Nice Day :)

Civil Unions v. Marriages

Today in my SOCI 130 class, we were talking about civil unions among homosexuals. Homosexuals are not allowed to get legally married in the majority of the United States. Althougth some states allow homosexuals to be legally unioned, they don't receive the same benefits that marriaged couples receive- such as inheritance, custody of children, and etc.

Should gay people be allowed to marry in order to get benefits? Homosexuals are fighting a civil war with the majority of the country. Should the American people give homosexuals their rights?

2. Yes, I know that you are racist and you talk about all races behind their backs.
3. Yes, you should know that your secret is out... and many people know that you are talking about them.
4. Yes, I thought we were friends, but you betrayed me.
5. Yes, money can change people.
6. Yes, I hope you change your ignorant perspective on life.
7. No, I will not stop advocating for equality!

Sincerly,

Boys Are the New Girls?

(WARNING:this blog is partially written in slang)

So i had a conversation with one of my friends...and she said that "men are so dramatic...boys are the new girls...they should take off their thongs and put some boxers on..."

This is my comment to her.

"Some dudes express their feelings in different ways...society has painted this vivid picture that is derived from the traditional sense that men are suppose to be "hard", strong, insensitive beings. If we as a people are willing to accept this conventional ideology of the male's persona, we also have to accept the stereotype of the woman - emotional, fragile, naggy, weak. Today, males and females are enhancing their personality traits. We as a people should accept the change! Think about it...all yall girls can easily say that men are acting like females bc we are becomin more emotional and sensitve...we can say yall are actin more masculine bc yall are actin more independent; yall are going to school, getting jobs, and maintaining careers- all in which are traditional traits for men. So i can easily tell you to to 'quit wearin boxers and put a thong on'...lol... but i won't cuz i'm not misogynistic male...lol...i love where we are going as a people. We are adopting each other traits in order to be a more egalitarian society. So I say...lets just accept the change that some males and females have endured..bc change can be good...and if you don't like the change..tough."

It's Natural to Go Natural

Many African Americans females at UNC are going natural. Everywhere you look you see black females rocking there "tiny weenie afro", their Bantu knots, or their temporary weaves that broadcasts their "new growth" of culture. Many people of are probably wondering what going natural actually is. Going natural is when one- particularly an African American woman - goes without getting relaxers and they cut the relaxed hair off.

Many African American females go natural for two main reasons: it is healthier for their hair and it gets allows them to relate with their culture. Hair is an important historical feature for African Americans; in the past it determined your status. Many people believed that "good hair" was defined as wavy or straight. As a result many individuals, one including Madam CJ Walker, invented and revolutionized hair care products that unraveled the tight curls of African American hair and conformed to society.

Hair straightening has been said to arise from an aspiration to conform to the Eurocentric perception of beauty. Some people even suggest that the concept of "good hair" orginated from multi-racial slaves who possesed wavy or straight hair due to sexual intercourse with white people. Today, African Americans are going natural all over the United States. They are embracing their culture and their past. Nowadays, it's natural to go natural!

Mix Relations

One of my friends that attend Carolina has endured much ridicule from her peers because she is bi-racial: her mother is white and her father is black. They call her Oreo, as well as other names that illustrate a mix individual. Although she laughs it off, she is insulted by the names. Many people forget about the racism that occurs to bi-racial people. They endure a lot of discrimination not only in the outside world, but also from some of their family members; most of the discrimination comes from family members that disagreed with the marriage.

Another one of my friend’s states, "It is a shame that we endure discrimination from both races from which we were derived."

Do Not Put Me in a Box!

Yes, I am African American, but that does NOT define who I am! Just because I am black doesn't mean I drink sweet tea, play certain sports, or listen to certain music. News flash sweet tea is a Southern thing not a black thing, and I haven't really listened to a rap song since the 90s . Random people come to my face "spitting" lyrics like I know the next line - Eight out of ten of the times I don't.

I went to the Barber Shop the other day to get a haircut. I wore a Carolina shirt and a pair cargo pants with my Carolina blue Jordan's. This man saw me, and the first thing he said to me was, "Are you on the football team?" I said, "No." Then he asked, "What about the basketball team?" I said, "No." Then, he said if I played any sports. And again, he received the same answer. Do we leave in a society were people are judged by their physical appearance and not their works?

Our color does not define who we are. As a people, we all have differences and similarities, and this transcends beyond race - Do not put me in a box!

Apathetic Views Are Pathetic

Two of my friends went to the Stone Center on Thursday and toured the facility. They asked the man at the head desk, "What is suppose to be going on in the upcoming weeks?", and he responded, "Not that many engagements, mostly practices." That BIG center is NOT being used to the best of its abilities. The library in the Stone Center is basically new because it barely used; there are even books that have not even been open.

Some people don't even know what the Stone Center is: it is a building for African Americans to learn more about their culture and the history of their ancestry. The African American students in this school should use the Stone Center more frequently- including myself. How many of you can actually say that you have fully toured The Stone Center? If you can, I have another question for you: Can you say that you actually used the facilities and the resources for your own benefit?

The Stone Center holds the answers to the questions that many people have about African American history. The question is, are we going to access it. Let's attempt to use the resources that was granted to use by the University to grasp a more informed outlook of the past, and a envision a prosperous view of our future!

I'm Here for A Reason!

I have heard too many people say that black people got accepted to UNC due to affirmitive action. All I have to say about it is that is not true for ALL African Americans. For those select few that have illustrated that Black people are only here because of a law, YOU ARE IGNORANT!!! I do not know about any other black students here, but i know that I WORKED my BUTT OFF to get her. I graduated at the top of my class - I was number 5 in my class of about 350. I was the only African American male to be ranked in the top 30 of the class - and there were many African American males in my school. I earned numerous awards and honors, including summa cum laude (I am not trying to be pressumptous, I am just stating the facts), and when someone tells me that I got here because of the color of my skin, I become furious. The crazy thing about it is that the majority of the people making the comments are BLACK people! Why would you degrade yourself?!?!? WHY? And then when a white person says something about affirmitive action, those same black people making the ignorant comments try to get mad. NEWS FLASH: you can't when you are making the comments too. Just stop the ignorant remarks or keep them to yourself! All I have to say is that I'm here for a Reason, and I know that you are too!

Playing Games with God...

There are many people on this campus that play with the power of God. They think it is funny or humorous to act as if they feel the spirit of God. They falsely speak in tongues and they engage in fake worship. They clearly do not understand the power in the things they perpetrate. When one is worshipping God they are engaging in an intimate moment with Him. God is not to played with.
Since the start of this new semester at UNC, I have seen many people play church. They act as if they are living the Christian lifestyle; yet, they are living the life full of sin and Hell! I understand that nobody is perfect, but Christians should strive to be. Stop the foolishness! Just stop it! Christians endure a lot of crap from people all over the world as being fake and hypocritical, and the people that are playing church are NOT making it easier for us.
We are living in our last days and we as a people do not have the time to be playing games with God!

Racial Competition

Is your race better than mine? That is the question that runs through the minds of many cultures. People have debates about this subject. They compete about past calamitous quandaries that caused their ancestors to become formidable and strong. These people maintain a certain persona that appears presumptuous. Some cultures actually think that their culture is better than another. This type of ignorant ideology leads to numerous ignorant perceptions upon life. They refuse to marry the opposite race, they secretly think they are superior to other races, and they secretly talk badly about other races and their culture. Here at Carolina, we as students are suppose to be a body of people that wants to learn about other people's culture. We should strive to understand people's background. We should not try to compete against each other. We are suppose to be a family. It is time to stop acting as if we are gods! We need to come down to the real world. This isn't Kansas anymore. We have real problems and conflicts, and it would be so much easier if we get OFF our pedestals and help each other through these hard times. There should be no racial competition because we are all mixed with some other race -whether we embrace it or not! We are ALL God''s children: we are all EQUALLY fearfully and wonderfully made by our Creator! Just get over it!

Can We Walk in Peace?

Walking down the sidewalk of Franklin Street, one of my friends was returning to the UNC campus from The Campus Barber. As he walked toward the bus stop, awaiting the U Campus Shuttle, three white boys - wearing Carolina Blue - followed him, and they taunted his name - they called him Nigger. Afraid, he ignored them and continued to walk toward the bus stop. How could this act of racism be present in a school full of diversity. UNC Chapel Hill is suppose to be one of the most diverse campuses in North Carolina; yet, many of the people that attend this school possess ideology of racism. My ancestors didn't die for nothing. They were not whipped and lynched for a pointless cause. Their blood that gushed from their wounds did not drip in vain. I demand JUSTICE. Can we as African Americans not walk in peace?
